Ever since the iPhone 3G launched, Apple knew they had a hit on their hand. With a cult-like following featuring some of the most passionate consumers in the industry, Apple has built one if its newest additions, the AppStore, into one of the most profitable new ventures in recent years. According to an article published on ChannelRegister.com, there are 1,647 applications available for the iPhone. That’s an enormous number of bells and whistles for you to add to one of the top-selling phones of all time. All told, Apple has racked up $500 million in sales from the AppStore. Let’s take a look at what you can expect from the AppStore if you’re contemplating, or have already made, a purchase of an iPhone 3G.
Here are some of the featured applications available in the AppStore according to Apple’s website:
1. eBay: Why sit at home and bid on an autographed Brett Favre Jets jersey or a signed Gershwin piano when you can ride around in a car, sit at the airport, or even exercise and do the same thing? It’s the most popular online auction site in existence and you can access it 24 hours per day, seven days per year right from your iPhone by downloading the application in the AppStore.
2. Super Monkey Ball: One of the top games ever made, you control your character’s movement by actually tilting the iPhone left and right. It’s pure genius and reminds me of how you control the Nintendo Wii. You can hit the screen as well to perform other functions, making Super Monkey Ball an interactive experience that’s unique to the iPhone.
3. Loopt: It’s like stalking, but not as illegal. It lets you figure out where friends are while you’re both on the move. It allows you to understand your friends’ every move and it’s available on your iPhone through the AppStore.
4. Nike: Check out athlete profiles, locate Nike stores around the world, watch videos, and download wallpapers. It’s the second most popular web application available in the AppStore.
5. AllMySports: This is an Olympic-themed program with Olympic-sized value for its users. Get up-to-the-second medal counts, find out information on Michael Phelps (who is hopefully the real deal and not the next Roger Clemens or Barry Bonds), and view the upcoming competition schedule.
6. BudgetBuster Daily Expense Tracker: This application is exactly what you think it is. An easy way to compile your daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly budget.
7. Holidays: I work with contacts around the world and nothing is more frustrating than waking up and realizing that it’s a holiday in another country. With the Holidays application, you can check out federal holidays around the globe. Never be caught by surprise again.
8. Wine Reviews: This one is brought to you by WineSpectator.com and includes reviews from outlets around the world. Thirty to forty featured wines are highlighted every day, so this application is always fresh. It’s a must for any wine aficionado.
9. Dave Matthews Band News: I laughed when I saw this one, but just like Mac users, DMB fans are extremely involved. This is essentially a collection of news feeds from various sources, all about the latest from Dave, Boyd, at the rest of the gang.
10. Three Card Monte: I couldn’t even tell you where to play this game online, but it’s available on the iPhone 3G in the AppStore.
