Despite issues with the iPhone 3G’s MobileMe capabilities, Apple’s latest piece of technology has been a rousing success worldwide. The company recently announced that it sold one million iPhones in the very first weekend they were available to the general public worldwide. One million units! It’s not very often that one million of anything is sold in a matter of three days – CDs, televisions, video games, you name it. Let’s take a look at how Apple celebrated its latest milestone, which made one of the most popular companies on the face of the Earth even more popular.
You all know who Steve Jobs is. Here’s what he had to say about one million units being sold in the very first weekend they were put on sale: “iPhone 3G had a stunning opening weekend. It took 74 days to sell the first one million original iPhones, so the new iPhone 3G is clearly off to a great start around the world.” I can’t remember this much hype off of one item other than tomorrow’s release of “The Dark Knight,” which has been talked about for the last five months ever since lead actor Heath Ledger passed away from an overdose in February. Therefore, I can’t imagine that the sales of the iPhone will drop off in sales anytime soon, either.
The new toy went on sale in 21 countries last Friday. If yours is one of these, you know the absolute insanity that characterized the stores where iPhone 3Gs were sold: Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Hong Kong, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Mexico, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, the U.K. and the U.S. As I write this, the 3G has been on sale for less than 12 hours in France, meaning the one million units doesn’t even include this blossoming nation. That list of countries represents four continents (all but South America, Africa, and Antarctica) and millions of people across the world (if not, a couple of billion). In fact, China and India are the only two large-population countries that I can name that aren’t on that list.
The App Store has also been the epicenter of activity this past weekend, garnering a ridiculous 10 million downloads worldwide. Jobs comments, “The App Store is a grand slam, with a staggering 10 million applications downloaded in just three days. Developers have created some extraordinary applications, and the App Store can wirelessly deliver them to every iPhone and iPod touch user instantly.” Ninety percent of the programs available at the App Store will run you less than $10. Apple has done an outstanding job of keeping its products priced reasonably, especially since its largest market, the United States, is in the midst of a severe economic downturn.
There are 800 applications available. They include ones that feature the 3G’s “large display, Multi-Touch™ user interface, fast hardware-accelerated 3D graphics, built-in accelerometer and location-based technology to bring far more powerful applications to the mobile arena than ever before.” Needless to say, Apple has developed a wide array of applications that let you get the most out of your iPhone 3G.
